  • The Spread of Buddhism and Language Change – The 14th International Conference on the Language Studies of Chinese Buddhist Literature
The 14th International Conference on the Language Studies of Chinese Buddhist Literature was held online from 10 to 12 December 2021 with the theme of “The Spread of Buddhism and Language Change”. The conference was co-organised by the Centre, the Department of Chinese Language Studies and the Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education of the Education University of Hong Kong. It served as a platform for 62 Buddhist scholars and experts from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom, Belgium and USA to discuss various topics related to the main theme.
 
Prof. William Wang Shiyuan, Professor of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and an Academician of Academia Sinica and Prof. Victor H. Mair of the University of Pennsylvania were invited to give keynote speeches. Their topics are “Languages in Contact, An Asian Perspective” and “The Impact of Buddhism on Chinese Language and Literature from Its Advent through the Medieval Period” respectively.

 
An independent committee has been formed to review the applications for Young Scholar Grant. Three out of 24 applicants have been selected for the grant. Details of the awardee and the topic they presented are as below:

Programme
  • Certificate Programme in Management Culture of Humanistic Buddhism
The Centre has jointly organized a few programmes with different units. Management Culture of Humanistic Buddhism is one of the areas that the Centre would like to conduct an in depth study. Since March 2019, the Centre has started seeking potential collaboration to launch a programme with the School of Continuing and Professional Studies of CUHK (CUSCS). With the supports and suggestions from numerous scholars and our continuous effort, the Certificate Programme in Management Culture of Humanistic Buddhism at Hong Kong Qualifications Framework level 3 co-oragnaized by the Centre and CUSCS has been approved and endorsed by the Senate. The first cycle of the programme has been officially launched in late November 2021.
 
  • Online Programme in Management Culture of Humanistic Buddhism
The Centre co-launched the Online Programme in Management Culture of Humanistic Buddhism with Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism from October 2021 to January 2022. 88 students from all over the world have successfully enrolled in this programme. Lecturers include Ven. Hsin Bau, Ven. Ru Chang, Ven. Miao Fan, Ven. Miao Nan, Mr. Jay Lee, Prof. Du Bau-ruei, Prof. Lin Tsong-ming, Prof. Chen Chien-Huang and Mr James Chao. As of 20 January 2022, 63 students have fulfilled the graduation requirements and completed the programme. Cycle 2 will be commenced in September 2022. Online Programme in Buddhist Life Management which will be co-launched by the Centre and Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism will also be offered in September 2022.
 
  • Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies
Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies has been offered by the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies of CUHK and the Centre since 2017. Enrollment figures of 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 were affected by Covid-19 and social movement. It resumes to normal level in 2021/2022. 62 students in total have completed their Master degree in previous 4 years. 2022/2023 programme is now open for applications. Lecture
The Centre held two lecture series in 2021 – “Contemporary Practice and Reinterpretation on the Contents of Ven. Master Hsing Yun’s Book Titled Buddha-Dharma: Pure and Simple” Lecture Series and “Management Culture of Humanistic Buddhism” Lecture Series. For the former lecture series, 12 Buddhist scholars were invited to give online lectures on “Buddha-Dharma: Pure and Simple” written by Ven. Master Hsing Yun. In total, it attracted over 2,000 participants from around the world to join.
 
13 Buddhist scholars, experts and enterprisers were invited to share their research outputs and experiences in 7 talks with the theme of "Management Culture of Humanistic Buddhism”. Nearly 1,250 participants have involved in this series.

 
As of December 2021, 103 public lectures have been held by the Centre.

 
 
  
Upcoming Events
  • Conference
The Centre will co-organize two international conferences in 2022. They are Forum on “Management Culture on Buddhism” to be co-organized by the Centre and Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism from June 11 to 12 and International Academic Conference: Humanistic Buddhist Arts and Culture to be co-organized by the Centre, Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism and College of Liberal Arts of Taiwan Cheng Kung University between 16 and 18 December. More details will be released in due course.
  •  Lecture
Three lecture series will be held in 2022. “A Dialogue between Buddha and Business Leaders” Lecture Series co-organized by Centre, Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism and Alumni Association of Humanistic Buddhism Management of CUHK will be held online during March - April 2022. 12 business leaders from Asian countries/ areas will share their practical experience in “Buddhist Management”. Prof. Lin Tsong-ming and Mr. James Chao will be invited to give comments. Ven. Miao Fan and Prof. Chen Chien-huang will be the moderator.
 
The Centre will co-orgnaized another lecture series with the same theme with Buddhistdoor by the end of 2022. Local leaders from different industries will share their practical experience in “Buddhist Management”. 4 pre-recorded lectures will be uploaded to the internet for viewing in due course.
 
The Office of the Arts Administrator of CUHK will collaborate with the Centre and hold the “Management of Mind: An Artist vs A Religionist” Lecture Series in May and June 2022. Local leaders from different industries will share their practical experience in “Management of Mind”.
 
 
Publication
The Centre has published 6 volumes of "Studies of Humanistic Buddhism in East and Southeast Asian Series”, 1 volume each of "Management of Humanistic Buddhism Series” and "Humanistic Buddhism: Arts and Literature Series” together with 1 issue of Studies in Humanistic Buddhism in 2021.


 
The Centre plans to publish 3 more volumes of "Studies of Humanistic Buddhism in East and Southeast Asian Series”, 1 volume of “Management of Humanistic Buddhism Series”, 1 symposium and 1 issue of Studies in Humanistic Buddhism in 2022.
