The first nationwide traditional college and university with modern implication

 

Fo Guang University (FGU) was founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun. It is the first university in Lanyang area and located in Linmei Village, Jiaoxi Township, Yilan Country. FGU creates excellent learning environment with spiritual campus, unsophisticated equipment, small class sizes and the best teacher-student ratio. It was formed in 1993 and founded in 2000 by the name: “Fo Guang College of Humanities and Social Sciences”. It formally recruited students in 2002 with small class sizes. In August 2006, it was renamed “Fo Guang University”. Currently, it comprises five colleges and fifteen departments.

 

The school motto of Fo Guang University is “Yi, Cheng, Dao, Tzu” which is promoted by Venerable Master Hsing Yun.. “Yi” is the ability to convert inner cognition into useful knowledge and possess independent and critical thinking skills. “Cheng” is the cognition to do right things and do things right. “Dao” means to seek the truth and acquire knowledge. “Tzu” is the heart with gratefulness and joyous giving to care and serve the society.

“Fo Guang Shan International University Consortium” includes five schools founded by Fo Guang Shan: Fo Guang University (Yilan, Taiwan), Nanhua University (Chiayi, Taiwan), University of the West (U.S.A.), Nan Tien Institute (Australia), and Guang Ming College (The Philippines). The establishment of the consortium has allowed resources of the five universities to be pooled and shared, giving students greater access to academic and research programs. FGU emphasizes the importance of international visions for all students. It has signed academic exchange agreements with over fifty universities worldwide to encourage students to be overseas volunteers or international students. FGU signed a 2+2 program with University of the West, which means students can study in two universities for two years separately and acquire two graduation certificates.

Although Fo Guang University is a young school, it emphasizes inheritance and learning atmosphere on campus. With excellent teachers and rich experience, FGU cultivates students and drives the atmosphere of seeking knowledge and learning.

“Humanities” is the main consideration of FGU, it incorporates into the trend of world universities and continues the spirit of Chinese education. In other words, it is the first nationwide traditional college and university with modern implication.
